The practice of kindness.
Metta (Pali), means kindness, benevolence, concern, friendliness.
Metta is a peaceful state of mind. It is the state of openness, of wishing the wellbeing of oneself and others. Mainly by changing negative thinking and emotions into kindness. Practicing metta slowly creates a mental attitude of wholesome intentions. Not only for ourselves. But also in relation to loved ones, to neutral persons, even those whom we dislike, and finally to those in all directions of the universe.
In this way, Metta means mental power, independency and joy.
When we express goodwill, it does not mean that we are going to be there for others all the time. We are wishing that all beings will wise up about how to find happiness.
Metta Meditation is development of friendliness towards all living beings. During metta meditation, people are amazed to find out that they have a capacity for loving kindness, both for themselves and for others. Meditation helps breaking the boundaries. Due to past experiences, many of us do not trust our capacity to kindness. But Metta meditation involves a tremendous opening and purifying of our intentions.
In three saturdaymornings we will explore this philosophy of metta. And we will practice intensive metta meditations.
Metta is highly praiseband by the Buddha (see Mettasutra’s) as ‘the armour of the bodhisattva’. It is bodhicitta. Giving. Awareness. Strength. Power. A great/vast mind: concerning all sentient beings. That they “wear great armor” means that, while armor is usually worn to protect the body from a physical attack, in this context it refers to the armor that protects the mind.
